Sometimes you just have to throw your plan out the window and go with the flow. My original plan for today’s post was to finally dedicate a post to chocolate cupcakes. Then I opened up my pantry and the Nutella was calling my name. I instantly ditched my original plan and started brainstorming how to incorporate Nutella into the chocolate cupcakes.

These Nutella cupcakes are chocolate cupcakes filled with Nutella and topped with Nutella cream cheese frosting. If you love Nutella I promise you will love these cupcakes.

Course Cupcakes
Servings 12 cupcakes

  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 3/4 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Instant Espresso
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/4 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1/3 cup Boiling Water
  • 1/2 cup Nutella

  • 8 oz Cream Cheese at room temperature
  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 4 cups Icing Sugar

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a standard cupcake pan with 12 paper baking cups.

  2. Add flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and instant espresso to the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large bowl with a handheld mixer. Mix the flour mixture on low speed until just combined.

  3. Add milk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla to the flour mixture and mix together on medium speed until well combined. Reduce speed and slowly add boiling water to the batter. Mix until just combined.

  4. Fill the prepared cupcake liners approximately 2/3 full with the cupcake batter. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely.

  5. Once cool, hollow centers and fill with Nutella then replace cupcake centers.

  1. Place the cream cheese and Nutella in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment; beat on medium speed until fluffy. Reduce speed to the lowest setting then slowly add the icing sugar. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. When the mixture is well combined beat on high speed for 2 minutes to ensure that the frosting is light and fluffy. Once the cupcakes are cool add the frosting.

Recipe Notes

If you have a piping bag on hand add the Nutella to the piping bag and use to fill the center of the cupcakes.
